While waiting in my dentist's office I happen to pick up the most current Newsweek magazine and happened upon the evolution article. Genetics has always been a fascinating topic for me. I even thought about majoring in it at Berkeley. Anyway, it pointed out that Darwin didn't have it completely right and LaMarck didn't have it completely wrong. Fascinating and important to know I think. It might also help explain how the identical twins I went to school with and knew as friends could be so different in personality. You go Obama in restoring science to it's rightful place. You might also want to slip in there the fact that quite often nature knows best.

I've come across two interesting articles on "green plastics". I plan to go back later when I have more time and compare and contrast and maybe research more - yeah I know, my hobbies aren't typical.

The Problem With BioPlastics

And I've finished a small article in Popular Science Dec. 2008 about how researchers at Metabolix (a biotechnology firm) are growing biodegradable plastic within the leaves of GE switchgrass. Yes, the evil genetically modified organism. The upside is that it produces a naturally occurring compound that is nontoxic, is less energy consumptive than traditionally produced petroleum-based products, and the leftovers could be used as a biofuel.

All I know at this point, firsthand, is that I have bought and am happy with clothing (hat and mittens) made from recycled plastic bottles (you'd never know it was from recycled plastic to look at it and feel it!) but I have no idea how this process compares to the above mentioned products. Afterall, plastic, like cell phones, seems to be here to stay so we better figure out the best ways to do it! (unless you just don't give a damn - but I hope that's not the case)

Maybe you all already knew this..but today I just found out why the Mona Lisa's eyes actually do seem to follow you as you move from one side of the painting to the other.

I came across a t.u. project that both taught me what a petawatt is (it has nothing to do with animal rights) and the fact that next summer a laser that outshines a supernova will be cranking out 1.4 of them.

That just blows my mind.

but it's good news for our oceans...

Anyone that knows me knows I love the ocean. From both the outside and in. So I love it when I get to report about GOOD NEWS.

President Bush designates marine monuments in the Pacific

Basically, Bush has designated monument status to areas of the Pacific that include the Mariana trench and parts of the Northern Mariana Islands which amounts to the largest marine conservation effort in history.

This is in addition to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands monument designation earlier in his administration.

Maybe someday I'll get to appreciate these areas first hand instead of just admire from afar. One can hope.

When I got home this morning I looked over at Tommy's empty cage and for an instant I saw him coming out of his nest box in his most intimidating posture he could manage (feathers fluffed, beak open, wings slightly spread) because he had just heard a strange noise/person coming in and he was prepared to defend his home and family even to the death (not that I think animals have a concept of death). I've also noticed Cassidy is hanging on the side of his cage a lot more. The side next to where Tommy's cage is. Even though I'm convinced those two would have done serious damage to one another I guess there is a void. Maybe a I like to listen to and watch you but don't you dare come too close or I'll have to kill you kind of thing. *Sigh* Tommy's passing was as peaceful as I could hope for and Dr. Simon did an exemplary job from beginning to end. Still, it's an end. Another piece of my heart stolen away. I intend to get the empty cage taken care of today and do some rearranging. I have no appointments today so I really have no excuse not to. Guess that's it for now. Time for breakfast and to get on with the day.
